Types of Driving Licenses

Learner’s Licence: This is a provisional licence, which allows you to learn and practise driving. It is valid for six months, which is more than enough time to improve your driving abilities and pass the competency exam. You must practise for at least a month before sitting for the practical.

Permanent Licence: You are eligible for a permanent licence if you pass the driving competency test, which consists of a ground test and a road test.

Applicants who wish to make an driving licence application in the Indian capital can opt for one or more type of vehicle they want. Delhi offers driving licence for a range of vehicle types, as specified below:

Light Motor Transport Vehicles: This licence applies to persons who operate commercial goods carriers and transport vehicles, as well as Light Motor Vehicles (Passenger) such as taxis, jeeps, delivery vans, and auto rickshaws.

Medium Goods Vehicle: This category consists of vehicles like trucks and tempos goods transportation.

Medium Passenger Vehicle: This category includes vehicles like minivans, tempos for passengers, and larger commercial vehicles.

Heavy Goods Vehicle: This category includes vehicles such as trucks and large vans, meant to transport goods.

Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicle: This category entails vehicles such as buses, road roller etc. used for commercial purposes and passenger transport.

Non-Transport Vehicles: This licence applies to applicants who drive private vehicles, which are further classified as Gearless Motorcycles (scooters, mopeds), Geared Motorcycles, and Light Motor Vehicles (cars).

Documents Required for Driving Licence in Delhi

  1. A valid learner’s licence, which allows you to learn to drive on the road. It will specify the class of vehicle for which you sought for the licence.
  2. Fees as per the rules.
  3. Proof of nationality/ citizenship (attested duplicate copies)
  4. One latest passport sized photo (less than six months old)
  5. Your original driving licence in case of authorizations of categories.

How to Apply for Driving Licence in Delhi

Online Procedure

  1. Step 1: Visit parivahan.gov
  2. Step 2: Under the online services tab and select the “Driving Licence Related Services” option
  3. Step 3: Choose the State you wish to apply from.
  4. Step 4: Click on the “Apply for Driving Licence” option.
  5. Step 5: Fill the required details
  6. Step 6: Upload the required documents
  7. Step 7: Pay the application fee.
  8. Step 8: Book a slot for a driving licence test.
  9. Step 9: Appear for the test as per the schedule.

Offline Procedure

  1. Step 1: You must obtain a Form 4, which is the application form for a driving licence in India. The Form is available for download from the state transportation department’s official website. Alternatively, you can obtain Form 4 from the local RTO Office.
  2. Step 2: Complete the application form and submit it along with other necessary documents at the nearest RTO.
  3. Step 3: Pay the application fee
  4. Step 4: Book a slot for driving test
  5. Step 5: Give the test at the RTO office
  6. Step 6: You will get a driving licence if you pass the test.

How long is my driving licence valid?

Your driving licence is normally valid for 20 years in India from the date of issuing or until you reach the age of 50, whichever comes first. However, if you receive a licence for a commercial, passenger, or cargo vehicle, it must be renewed every third year.
