ESIC Challan

The ESI Scheme aims to provide hassle-free services to both employers and employees through its information portal and services portal. As part of this effort, all compliance and payments are covered through the internet. Employers can remit monthly contributions through portal. Presently, online payment is enabled for SBI account holders having a net banking facility.

Two important aspects for making online payments are: 

  • SBI internet banking user id and password
  • ESIC user id and password

Creation of Challans

To create a challan, the contributor of the payment “must log on to the ESIC portal -> enter the details of the insured persons, details of their wages and number of working days. Upon doing this, the employer gets an option to generate a challan and take print out of the same.” It has to be noted that all challans printed by employers are duplicate copies.

Information Stored in the ESIC Portal

The following details are stored in the ESIC portal while generating the challan:

  • A distinct fourteen digit challan number which is auto generated as a check digit.
  • The employers’ code no & name in case of generating challans.
  • The amount that is to be paid towards contribution.
  • The Challan creation date.

Significances of Check Digit

The sole purpose of the check digit is to verify the correctness of the other numbers when entered in the bank at the time of collection of contribution amount. It is auto-generated and is easily incorporated in the ESIC portal and is also incorporated in the core banking system. When the bank official enters the challan number and other details,  the bank’s software application verifies the accuracy of the challan numbers entered. Note: In case, there is an error while entering the challan number in the system, it will not accept the challan number entered

How to Register to ESIC Portal?

  1. Step 1: Open the official website of ESIC.
  2. Step 2: Next, on the homepage you will see the ‘Employer Sign-up‘ option. Click on that.
  3. Step 3: Enter all your basic details and click ‘Submit.’
  4. Step 4: You will be registered on the ESIC portal.

How to Login to ESIC Portal?

  1. Step 1: Open the official website for ESIC Login.
  2. Step 2: Click on the ‘Employer Sign-up’ option.
  3. Step 3: Enter your user ID and password. Then click ‘Submit.’

Payment Against E-Challan at Bank

A duplicate copy of the challan is presented at the bank for payment. The bank official verifies the check digit incorporated to the banks’ Core Banking System. The bank official enters the portal and verifies the following details which is stored on the banks’ system:

  • Amount
  • Mode of payment
  • Challan number

These details are transferred to the ESIC through MIS data. The bank clerk after receiving the money and entry of the details, returns the duly received duplicate copy of the challan to the employee. The second copy of the challan is kept by the bank branch for their records. In the case of clearing cheques, the transactions are entered in the parking account for the first instance. Once the cheque is cleared, the required information is entered in the banking system.

How to Make Online Payment on the ESIC Portal?

  1. Step 1: Visit the official website of ESIC at www.esic.in.
  2. Step 2: Use your login credentials to log in to the portal.
  3. Step 3: Post login, you will be redirected to a new web page wherein a list of all the modules and hyperlinks are listed.
  4. Step 4: Click on the Challan Number for the period you wish to make the online payment.
  5. Step 5: Note down the challan number for future reference and click on ‘Continue‘.
  6. Step 6: You can click on ‘State Bank of India‘ under ‘Net Banking’. If you have another bank account through which you wish to make the payment, click on ‘Other Bank’s under ‘Other Payment Modes’.
  7. Step 7: Enter your login credentials to log in to the bank’s net banking portal. Check the details of the amount and the recipient. If everything is satisfactory, you can proceed to make the payment.
  8. Once the payment is successful, save the receipt for future reference.

FAQs

Will I have to pay any penalty if I fail to make the ESIC payment on time?

Yes, you will attract an interest of 12% p.a. with respect to each day of default or in default in payment of the contribution amount.

What will the employer code number?

The employer code number will be a 17-digit number provided to each of the factory or establishment registered under the provisions of the Act. The employer will have to provide the code number to complete the ESIC online payment.
