LIFE Mission Kerala

Livelihood Inclusion Financial Empowerment, also known as LIFE, is a Kerala Government initiative to provide free houses for all homeless people in the state. In the state budget 2024-25, the government earmarked Rs 1,132 crore for the LIFE Mission Kerala, which will be used to build 4.25 lakh by the end of the fiscal year.

LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion Financial Empowerment) Mission is the Kerala Government’s mission to build free houses for all homeless people in the State. Planned in phases, the scheme provides a comprehensive shelter strategy for every landless and homeless person. LIFE Mission Kerala Housing Scheme focuses on four main areas: affordable housing, improving public infrastructure, strengthening agriculture and improving natural resource management. Over three lakh houses have been handed over so far under this scheme. The total spend of the project is estimated over Rs 4,000 crore, and the funding is being raised from different sources, including State agencies, local bodies, Union government and other social sector organisations.

What are the eligibility criteria for the LIFE Mission Housing Scheme 2024?

  • The applicant should be a Kerala resident
  • He/she must be landless, and all ration card members must be landless
  • The applicant’s annual income should not exceed Rs 3 lakh
  • Individuals working in the government sector are not eligible to apply
  • The applicant should have a ration card issued by the State
  • Priority is given to applicants from Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, fishermen communities, economically weaker sections (EWS) and flood-affected sections

The beneficiary application for the LIFE Kerala Mission Program can be made online through the official website. Documents for application can also be submitted at the portal. The application can also be made offline at the nearest district administration office. It is a simple process requiring only a few documents, including proof of identity and income. The beneficiaries are shortlisted after the State authority examines the application.

How are beneficiaries chosen for the Kerala Housing Scheme (LIFE Mission) 2024?

After receiving the applications, the officials tally the same with the Union Government’s social and economic caste survey (2011). Field officers also visit the applicant’s house for ground-level verifications. Then the list is made and published. If someone’s name is not on the list, there is also a system for appeal at the Panchayat level for such applicants.
