The Uttar Pradesh Marriage Registration Rules 2017 mandate the compulsory registration of all marriages solemnised in the state. Marriages can be registered under the Uttar Pradesh Hindu Marriage Registration Rules, 1973. Upon registration, a marriage registration certificate will be issued. Uttar Pradesh Hindu Marriage Registration Rules, 1973

As per the rules of UP Hindu Marriage Registration Rules, 1973, the below-mentioned conditions should be satisfied by the bride and groom:

  • Marriages should be performed under Hindu customs
  • Groom and Bridegroom should be Hindus
  • Groom should have completed 21 years, and bride age should be 18 years at the time of marriage
  • Any of the below-mentioned places should fall within the jurisdiction of the Registering Officer in Uttar Pradesh
    • Residence of bridegroom
    • Residence of the bride
    • Solemnization place

Uttar Pradesh Marriage Registration Rules 2017

Central Government’s rule regarding marriage registration has been implemented in UP since August 2017 by Women Welfare Department. As per the provision of this rule, the UP Government has made marriage registration mandatory in the state, including the Muslim community.  Marriage needs to be registered for the following purposes:

  • To prevent child marriages
  • For enabling widows to claim inheritance
  • To help women to exercise their rights of maintenance from husband and custody of children
  • To check bigamy or polygamy
  • To serve as a deterrent to husbands deserting their wives

Documents Needed to Apply for Uttar Pradesh Marriage Certificate

  • Marriage registration Application forms
  • Affidavit in the prescribed format
  • Age proof of the Groom and Bride  – Birth certificate or Mark Sheet
  • Address Proof – Ration card, Voter ID, Driving licence, Passport
  • Address Proof – Aadhaar Card, PAN Card and Voter ID
  • Photographs of couples (Joint Photo of bride and groom)
  • Wedding Card (Marriage invitation letter)
  • Witness Photographs – Two witness

How to Register a Marriage Online in Uttar Pradesh

  1. Visit the IGRSUP (Integrated Grievance Redressal System of UP) website.
  2. Click on the marriage registration option.
  3. Enter the Aadhaar card information for the first applicant. The system will generate an OTP sent to the first applicant’s registered mobile number.
  4. The system will retrieve details from the provided Aadhaar number, including the applicant’s photo.
  5. On the next page, enter the second applicant’s Aadhaar details. An OTP will be sent to the second applicant’s registered mobile number, and details will be automatically retrieved from the Aadhaar card.
  6. Both applicants must then fill in their details to apply for marriage registration under UP marriage registration rules.
  7. Upload current photographs of both the bride and groom, save the page, and proceed.
  8. Provide detailed information about the marriage, including the date and place, and save the page.
  9. Enter the witness’s details, which are mandatory for the marriage registration.
  10. Upload photographs for the witnesses mentioned.
  11. Review the application details, click the preview icon to check for any mistakes, and correct them before final submission.
  12. Submit the application form by clicking the submit button.
  13. Note down the application number and password provided for future reference.
  14. Pay the application fee through any payment medium.
  15. After thorough processing by the authorities, the marriage registration certificate will be issued to the couple.
